Local Area Guide
Exploring Hawes and the Yorkshire Dales
Shops and Essentials
The shops in Hawes are a 5 - 10 minute walk down the hill and are definitely worth a visit. (It’s an uphill walk on the way back!).
Ellijah Allen and the Spar shop can supply your groceries. For amazing fresh bread and tasty local meat, there is J W Cockett and Son.
Hawes has a selection of gift shops, outdoor shops and antique shops. We even have our own community petrol station with very competitively priced fuel. (Dalehead Garage). On a Tuesday, there are a small number of market stalls in Hawes. On summer Saturdays, there is often a craft fair on in the market hall.
You will find a number of places to eat in Hawes including cafes, pubs, a fish and chip shop and an Indian restaurant / take away.
For eating out in Hawes we recommend the Wensleydale Pantry. (Which is above the Spar shop). Open 7 days a week. Opening times vary depending on the season. The puddings here are amazing! For take aways we recommend The Chippie. Try the (very local) Wensleydale cheese in batter!!
Larger food shops can be found in Leyburn (R Campbells and the Co-op). Further afield, there are Tesco, Lidl and Aldi supermarkets in Catterick Garrison. If you are staying with us for a while, you can arrange a supermarket delivery from Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury or Asda to our property address. (Please let us know if you are planning to do this – we can let you know our address and delivery arrangements).
Transport
Free parking for one vehicle is available on-site. Please use the designated space (hard standing to the right of the barn). If you require a second car parking space, just let us know.
The Little White Bus provides minibus services from Hawes to Garsdale Train Station. Here you can alight a train on the scenic Settle-Carlisle railway route. The Little White bus also provides a daily service to Leyburn and carries on to Tesco supermarket (at Catterick Garrison) Monday to Saturday. Stage 1 Cycles (bike shop in Hawes) provide bike hire.
Things to Do
The Wensleydale Creamery is a must visitor attraction if it’s your first visit to Hawes. There are tours of the creamery bookable online, or you can just turn up and visit the cheese shop and the gift shop. There are many different flavoured cheeses for sale in the cheese shop, and you can try before you buy! There is also a lovely café and a restaurant here with a very cheesy menu. Hawes is an excellent base for walking and has a variety of walks to suit everybody. If you want to walk locally, check out Hawes Mosaic Walk or the Hawes to Sedbusk walk. For long distance walkers, The Pennine Way and The Herriot Way both pass through Hawes. If you are doing one of these walks, Hawes is a great place to have a rest day (or two!). For scenery lovers and mountain lovers, the very impressive Ribblehead Viaduct and the Yorkshire three peaks are only a short drive away.
There is an excellent website and walks app for the area found here: www.yorkshiredales.org.uk/places-to-go/welcome-to-hawes/
The area is also excellent for mountain biking and road cycling – some of the local roads have been used by the Tour de France! Cycling - Yorkshire Dales National Park : Yorkshire Dales National Park
If you would like any local recommendations for walking and cycling routes, Kev will happily chat about these if asked!
